Morning all.

The Red Cross supply wheelchairs for short term loan (up to 8 weeks) for a small donation (I think £20).
I phoned up to arrange collection of mine at the end of the 'lease' and was advised that they now do long term free loan for social use. Previously you needed to be dependant upon a wheelchair including indoors, to loan one long term from our local authority.

My GP wrote to our local 'wheelchair services' recommending me, and they sent a letter back with the phone number and a code number. I then phoned the Red Cross and they delivered a lovely, nearly new wheelchair correct for my height and weight, complete with new cushion. They come and service it each year and there was no charge, not even for the delivery!

This will be so handy for all sorts of outings and I will not be restricted to shopmobility opening hours etc.

Just thought I would share this. Aren't the Red Cross wonderful!

They are indeed, Jan. I borrowed a wheelchair from them not long after I was diagnosed, on the recommendation of my rheumy. We took it with us on holiday to Ireland, and I certainly needed it.

Take care,

Wow, that is brilliant! It's not often you get good service like that!

I'm hoping I might not need to take that route but with two dodgy knees walking is quite painful so I shall bear the Red Cross in mind. Thanks for posting this Jan ThumpUp

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson
